Lecture – In Peter Mackridge’s new book “Language and National Identity in Greece, 1766-1976” (Oxford University Press, 2009), he explores the ideological, social, and linguistic causes and effects of the Greek language question in its many and passionate manifestations over two turbulent centuries. He shows the crucial way in which Greek linguistic identities have interacted in the creation of the modern nation since the War of Independence 1821. On Monday, September 14th, he will give a lecture entitled “Why was there a language contoversy in Greeece?” raising some of the issues addressed in this work. The lecture will be co-hosted by the British School at Athens and the Oxford Alumni Society of Greece.
